Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (2024)

This game mode will likely have unobtainable achievements as early as October 2023. Focus on completing these achievements prior to October 2023 if you intend to complete this game to 100%. If you want to complete the achievements that are highest priority first, head down to the next red warning message for the section on those achievements.

Welcome to Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) in NHL 23! Going forward I'll refer to this game mode as HUT. This game mode is the NHL game franchise's version of a trading card game mixed with hockey video game.

Once you enter Hockey Ultimate Team mode from the main menu, you'll be brought to the HUT menu.

You'll have a few starter packs to open which will give you enough players to field a team. The players you get will have a little bit to do with the team you chose as your favorite team when you first launched the game. For me, I chose the Pittsburgh Penguins as my favorite team and I was given a handful of mid-level Penguins players to complete my roster with.

You'll also receive your first Free Daily Login pack right away. You can get one Free Daily Login pack every 23 hours. There is an achievement tied to opening 7 of these, so you'll need to come back on a few different days to collect enough. But for now, you've got one out of the way.

Once your team is ready and you've clicked through the popup boxes telling you what to do, we're going to head into the OBJECTIVES menu. Once inside the objectives menu, navigate down to TUTORIAL objectives and press Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (1). Once you do this you'll be on a list of objectives. Press Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (2) on each one in the list to be taken to screens giving you helpful tips, and how-to information about each of the modes within the HUT mode. (Don't worry, I'll guide you through each area if you don't remember all the info - there is no pop quiz).

Once you select each one and view the pop-up screens, you'll unlock your first achievement:

  • Training Wheels

Now that you're a bit more familiar with the HUT mode, we're going to head into a game and get some practice.

There are both single player and online multiplayer modes within HUT, so for now, we'll play some single player and work toward a few achievements to give you some play time to familiarize yourself with your players and gameplay.

From the HUT menu, press Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (6) and Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (7) until you get to CHALLENGES under the SINGLE PLAYER tab. Press Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (8) to go into the challenges mode. You'll see a bunch of cards on the screen for different sets of challenges. We're going to play through the TRAINING CAMP challenges. Find the Training Camp card and press Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (9) to open it up. You'll now have more cards on the screen showing the different challenges available. Each one of these challenges has three objectives to complete. In order to consider a challenge completed, you need to earn at least one star, or achieve one of the three objectives within that challenge. You can see the objectives on this screen on the right side (along with the period length, and game difficulty setting, and the team you'll be playing against). You'll want to make a note of the three objectives and focus on completing one of them at a minimum (of course I'd recommend focusing on the objective you feel most confident you'll be able to complete). For me, the objectives related to shots on goal, hits, and faceoffs tended to be the easiest. The objectives related to win by X number of goals, score X goals, and things like that were harder for me as I'm not an elite scorer in the game. It'll be up to you to decide which objectives work best for your skill set.

For these training camp challenges, one of the objectives is simply "complete the game" which will give you plenty of time to try for the objectives without worrying about winning or losing.

Select your first challenge by pressing Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (10) to go into the pregame menu. Choose OFFLINE game type, and then you'll be taken to the next screen where you'll select jerseys and everything else. Press Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (11) a few times to select jerseys and controllers and proceed into the game.

This first challenge is on rookie difficulty with only 1 minute periods. So you won't have a lot of time to play, but the objectives are pretty straightforward. Remember you'll unlock one of them automatically just for completing the game, so focus on the other two. For me it was 3 shots on goal and score 1 goal (which go together perfectly). I spent most of the game just firing shots at the net from different angles and scoring. When the game ends, you'll collect your rewards, then head over to the next challenge.

You'll need to keep playing through these challenges. There are 4 in the first set of training camp challenges (Group 1) and 4 in the second set (Group 2) that you'll need to complete. When you finish these you'll have 8/10 challenges completed, and a good start on coins and packs to help you out along the way.

Once your first 8 are done, you'll need to play 2 more challenges. I would recommend finding the active challenges for the current event (for me it was "MILESTONES CHALLENGES" at the time of writing this, prior to that it was "FANTASY HOCKEY"). The event challenges usually have a countdown on them indicating how much time is remaining. Try and do your best on the event challenges as they'll usually reward you with collectibles which will be important later on when completing sets.

Once you finish your 10th challenge, you'll earn your next achievement:

Now your team should have a pretty good foundation of players, coins, collectibles, and other important items needed to get the rest done.

We're going to take a quick break from playing and unlock one more quick achievement.

Head to the auction house from the HUT menu (found under the EXCHANGE tab). Inside the auction house menu, press Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (17) to select 'Browse Auctions'. Once you're in, press Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (18) to open the search filters. Then go down to the 'Buy Now Range' filter. Press Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (19) to open it up and for 'Buy Now Maximum' set your price to 400 coins. Press Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (20) to go back to the search filters bar, and press Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (21) to search. You should now see pages of players on the right side of the screen that have a 'Buy Now Price' of 400 coins or less. You should have more than enough coins from your challenges to buy one of them. Select the cheapest one (for me it was 300 coins) and press Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (22). Then select 'Buy Now'. You'll have to press Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (23) a few more times to confirm that you really want to buy that player. Once you do, send the player to your collection. It may take a few moments to unlock, but you'll unlock your next achievement:

Now onto the fun part.

These next achievements will likely be discontinued/unobtainable first. Complete this prior to October 2023.

We're going to head over to the 'HUT CENTRAL' menu tab within HUT. The top right box on this menu for me was always 'HUT RUSH'. Select this box and enter the HUT RUSH game mode. The exact game modes within this change from week to week, so I can't list out every detail here. But look for HUT RUSH 3v3 mode and choose Create Lineup. Once you have your best lineup, choose PLAY CPU, and choose ROOKIE difficulty. This will put you into a 3v3 game against computers with your created lineup. There are event objectives to complete which will be shown on the loading screen. These are generally cumulative over multiple games, feel free to work on them while you're playing if you want to improve your team. However, our goal here is to just complete FIVE of these games for another achievement. When your first game is finished, select "play next game" from the end game menu. It'll take you right into the next HUT RUSH game. Once you complete five games (should take you about half an hour) in HUT RUSH, win or lose, you'll unlock your next achievement:

  • Force 5

Complete 5 games in HUT Rush

Before we head to the next game mode, you'll want to make sure your team is as strong as it can be. Head over to the 'Store' tab from the HUT menu and check the inbox and unopened packs area. Open any unopened packs and collect any items from your inbox and send them all to your collection.

Once you're done with that head to the 'MY TEAM' tab, and select 'Edit Lineup'. Press Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (34) in to go to the auto fill menu. Change 'Autofill Type' to SYNERGY by pressing Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (35), and select a synergy type below. For me, the 'FLY THE ZONE' synergy activated when I used it, as I had enough players for that. In your case, go down the list of synergies one at a time selecting each one until you get one that activates with enough players (the gold badges at the bottom of the screen will say [active] in green text). Once you successfully activate a synergy, you'll unlock another achievement:

  • Team Chemistry

Now press Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (40) in again for the autofill menu, choose HIGHEST OVR and press autofill. This will generate your highest overall stat lineup and this is what I played all my games with.

For the next achievement, you may have already earned it while tweaking your roster, but I'll list out the steps in case you haven't.

We need to add an X-FACTOR player to our HUT lineup. Do this by pressing Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (41) on any player in your lineup and going down to 'substitute'. From there you'll see your available players not in your lineup. Look for one that has 'X-FACTOR' on the card (generally on the bottom right, and likely a big red X somewhere on the card). If you have one, add this player to your lineup. If you don't have one, you'll need to continue opening packs and/or buying from the auction house until you get one that can enter your lineup. Once you do this you'll unlock:

  • Game Changer

The last team editing achievement we're going to get while we're here is related to upgrading a player. This one can be tricky as it requires you to first have a player that can be upgraded, then you need to upgrade them. Players that can be upgraded are generally marked with green arrows in the upper right corner of their player card. You'll need to find one of these in your inventory (or in packs and/or auction house) to be able to complete an upgrade. Once you have one of these cards, press Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (45) in while looking at the player card from your lineup to go into the upgrade screen. At the top of the page you'll see TIERS listed with a button that says 'Purchase Tier'. Once you purchase your first tier, the card will upgrade to a Higher OVR with better stats and you'll unlock the next achievement:

  • Team Upgrade!

Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (47)Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (48)Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (49)

Before leaving this area, be sure to press Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (50) in again and choose HIGHEST OVR one more time and autofill your best lineup.

Now we're going to get back to playing some games.

Head to the 'Online' game tab and find HUT Rivals. You should see a bar that has five notches indicating you need to play 5 games to qualify. The goal here will be to simply complete 5 games. This game mode can be fairly frustrating if you're trying to win because you'll be matched with people of all sorts of varying skill level. Just remember we need to complete games, and winning/losing doesn't matter in our case. Honestly, you can even quit after the first period to register a DNF loss and complete the game if you want to save time. I would complete at least one game to the end, or until your opponent quits just to be sure everything unlocks first though.

Once you complete your first HUT Rivals game, you'll unlock another achievement:

  • Head to Head

Complete an Online game in Hockey Ultimate Team

1 guideGuide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (52)Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (53)Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (54)

Complete 4 more (for a total of 5) and you'll unlock another:

  • League Tryouts

    Complete 5 Rivals Placement Games

Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (55)

1 guideGuide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (56)

This next achievement is another potentially unobtainable/discontinued one starting October 2023. I would get this unlocked prior to October 2023.

Next, we're going to head to SQUAD BATTLES from the HUT Single Player tab. Choose squad battles and choose an opponent to play against. The "team of the week" is usually the strongest opponent, so you may want to press Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (57) and go to the rest of the opponents and pick one. Choose ROOKIE difficulty for your game, and whatever length of periods you want (I would recommend 3 minutes). For this achievement, you need to actually win the game of SQUAD BATTLES, so hopefully you've figured out how to play by now. Focus on making good crisp passes to open teammates, and create movement left to right in front of the goalie to score. By playing on ROOKIE difficulty, you should be able to score a few goals. Just be sure to play good defense as well and keep the other team from scoring so you can come away with the win. Once you win a game, you'll get another achievement:

Now you've completed all the gameplay achievements in HUT mode, but you'll still have three achievements left to complete.

The first achievement I'm just going to mention as it's time related and there's nothing special you need to do. You need to collect 7 Free Daily Login packs from logging into HUT. You get one new pack every 23 hours in HUT, so you'll need to keep coming back for roughly one week to get all 7 packs you need. There is a countdown timer at the top right of the HUT menu that indicates how long until your next pack is ready. You can also press Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (62) from the HUT menu to 'check for more rewards' and it'll tell you if you have a pack ready or not, and how much time is remaining. I mentioned this first, because these 7 packs will contain items you can use for the next two achievements as well.

Here's what you get for opening your 7th pack:

Next, there are two achievements related to completing sets and acquiring items.

For the first, we're going to try and use a shortcut glitch to save you multiple hours worth of time. We're going to try and unlock the achievement for collecting an event player. As of November 6, 2022, this still worked, but I'll also list out helpful tips in the event it stops working in the future.

SHORTCUT METHOD:

From the HUT Menu, navigate to SETS. Now select 'SPOTLIGHT 23' (text says 'HUT SPOTLIGHT EVENT SETS'). Now select 'COLLECTIBLE SETS' (first item on the left with the 'SPOTLIGHT 23' image on it). Once you're there, select the first set (marked as 0/15). Now choose a card slot, press Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (67) and choose 'SEARCH COLLECTION'. Once you enter the search screen, the achievement should unlock without you completing the requirements.

STANDARD METHOD:

If the prior method is no longer working OR if you would rather complete the requirements of collecting an event player, it'll take you a bit more work, but as of right now, it's still not horribly long. There are multiple sets available at most times that require you to trade in THREE specific event collectibles for ONE event player card. There are a few decent ways to do this as of November 22 with the sets that are currently available (there will be more new sets in the future that may be easier, but for the most part, they're all the same).

The easiest way I found so far: Save up about 40,000 coins. Go into the Spotlight collectible sets and go all the way to the right until you see a 2x collectible trade in set. You'll need to trade in TWO 84+ OVR players for two event collectibles. These players run for anywhere from 7k-10k coins in the auction house, and you'll need 4 of them to complete the set twice for 4 collectibles. Search the auction house from inside the set by selecting 'SEARCH AUCTION HOUSE'. Find the cheapest ones to save yourself some coins, look for players in the 7-8k price range. Buy one and send it to your set, do the same thing, buy another one and send it to your set. Now complete the set to get two event collectibles. You'll need to repeat this same process again to get two more event collectibles for a total of FOUR.

Now go back to the 'SPOTLIGHT 23 EVENT SETS' area, and find the player sets that say 0/3 (with the player pictures on them). The one I used was the 'Kris Letang MSP Set (Untradeable)' only because I'm a Penguins fan. Put three of your recently acquired collectibles in the set, press the complete set button, and you'll be rewarded with a shiny new event player and an achievement

The achievement you'll earn for completing this is:

  • In the Mix

1 guideGuide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (69)Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (70)

The last HUT specific achievement to unlock is related to completing 10 sets. If you did the method above actually completing the sets, you'll be well on your way to 10 set completions. If you didn't, you'll still have lots of stuff you can turn in.

The first thing I did was go into the 'Seasonal Rewards' sets and trade in all the seasonal reward collectibles I got along the way in the smallest sets possible. I completed the 0/2 set at the far right end, the 0/3 set, and the 0/4 set. That brought me to 3/10 sets. Next, I went into the 'Exchange Sets' and completed the gold jersey exchange set twice with all the jerseys i had in my collection. I was actually one jersey short and had to buy one from the auction house for 350 coins. Completing those gave me 5/10 completed. I was able to do the same thing with jersey number collectibles (which will depend on how many jersey numbers you've pulled) and goalie masks which brought me to 7/10. For the last three, I completed two training camp sets using the collectibles I earned doing the challenges, and the last set I completed was an event set for trading in 15 gold players for a collectible, bringing me to 10/10. Obviously the sets you complete will largely be dependent upon what players and items you got from your packs along the way completing games and challenges, but I would focus on completing the smallest sets possible. Just remember whether you turn in 40 cards or 2 cards to complete a set, it still counts as one set.

Once you get your 10 sets completed, you'll earn your last HUT specific achievement:

  • Sets of 10

Complete 10 sets in Hockey Ultimate Team

Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (72)Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (73)Guide for NHL 23 - Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) (74)

Now that we've completed all the HUT mode specific achievements, let's head over to the other online game mode, WORLD OF CHEL.

4. World Of CHEL2. General hints and tips
