Strong pitching, defense spark Memorial baseball's sixth consecutive sectional title (2024)

PRINCETON, Ind. — Alex Broshears began celebrating as he started to round the bases.

The Memorial junior right fielder didn't just hit his first home run of the season. It was the first of his high school career.

Broshears hit a two-run shot to right field against Boonville in the Class 3A Sectional 32 championship Monday evening at Gil Hodges Field. And Memorial rolled the rest of the way until a walk-off wild pitch secured its sixth consecutive sectional title.

The Tigers are again moving on to the regional round after shutting out Boonville 10-0 in six innings. They've won the sectional crown every season since 2018.

"It's super nice. Not many teams get to be sectional champions," Broshears said. "The fact that we get to do it almost every single year we're here, it's amazing."

"Winning a sectional is special to everybody, no matter who it is," senior catcher Thomas Lynch added. "Winning a sectional with your best friends is really the best feeling in the world. You can't top it."

Memorial (18-9) takes an entire team effort to dominate. That was no different going against Boonville (12-13), who rallied from a 7-0 deficit earlier against No. 9 Princeton to reach the championship.

Not only was Broshears clutch at the plate, but he excelled on defense and robbed base hits. Lynch, who swings one of the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference's hottest bats, had his second three-hit performance of this postseason — he has four doubles in the last five games. Junior Matthew Fisher also continued to show why he's one of the state's best aces.

The Indiana University commit allowed a pair of hits and recorded six strikeouts in a little over three innings as he made his first start on the mound in a sectional championship.

Fisher has continued to work himself into shape just eight months after injuring his elbow in football.

"I feel better," Fisher said. "It's never fun to sit out and being able to get out there and compete. To be able to be back and be out there with my teammates is an amazing feeling."

Memorial will face No. 3-ranked Jasper (25-6) in next week's regional looking to complete a season sweep. The Wildcats have won nine of their last 11 while limiting opponents to about one run per contest over the last nine games.

"They've always been a quality team," Tigers coach Rip Collins said. "Coach Terry (Gobert) does a good job (and) they're always prepared. It's always a grind. So I look forward to the opportunity."

Collins will focus on Jasper at a later time. For now, the Tigers will soak up this special championship victory as they get to be with each other for at least one more week.

"We kind of hit the cruise control there in those middle innings, which this team tends to do a little bit," Collins said. "If that's one thing we've got to work on, it's trying to keep the hammer down and stay on the accelerator."

3A: Jasper stifles Washington to extend state sectional title record

One of the state's best teams keeps on rolling this postseason.

Jasper blanked Washington 2-0 as Kai Kunz pitched a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts — he also hit a double and scored a run. Andrew Noblitt and Jack Levin combined for four hits, including two doubles, plus two RBIs and a stolen base.

This is Jasper's 41st sectional title in program history to extend its state record.

2A: Top-ranked North Posey holds off Mater Dei

This matchup between two top-10 teams lived up to the hype.

No. 1 North Posey held off a final-inning rally to defeat No. 10 Mater Dei 6-4 in the sectional championship at Bosse Field. The Wildcats had four more hits than the Vikings as Charlie Hoffman and Ethan Goodin each collected three hits and a double. Ethan Mansfield and Caige Christie also had multi-hit performances, as the Vikings won their first sectional title since 2021.

Mater Dei scored three in the seventh and had the winning run at the plate. Easton Luigs, who was pulled earlier in the inning, re-entered and recorded the final two outs. The senior went 6 2/3 innings with six strikeouts on 93 pitches.

"I'm so blessed to have this group," said North Posey coach Mark Kirkman. "It's one I will remember forever and my entire coaching staff. They've all bought in. I'm going to savor (this team) for a long, long time. Easton Luigs was running on absolute fumes. He's just a freaking competitor."

1A: Tec*mseh avenges sectional championship loss to Evansville Christian

The Braves were Class A state runner-up just two seasons ago. They looked to make another postseason run again last spring but fell in a one-run game to ECS in the sectional championship.

Tec*mseh bested ECS in the rematch, defeating the Eagles 12-3 to clinch its third sectional title in four seasons. This is also the first career sectional title for Eric Barnes in his first year leading the Braves. DJ DuPont nearly went the distance on the mound and hit two home runs. Taylor George also tallied three hits with a double.
